How many People know the Christmas tradition in English?

When you hear the word “Christmas” what do you think of?

This Christmas do you think about snow, chocolates, or a Christmas tree?

What do you think about a barbeque on a beach with friends?

If you live in an English-speaking country in the Northern Hemisphere like in the USA, Canada, or England - then December is usually a cold, dark month. If you live in an area of the Southern Hemisphere such as Australia, New Zealand, Or South Africa then your Christmas goes with the Summer atmosphere. People can speak English in different languages and different countries all around the world. The Christmas tradition is not the same in each country. Here are some of the Christmas traditions that are common in the US and in the UK.

1. Family get-togethers

Most families try to get together to celebrate on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. This informal gathering is called a get-together which is a noun. Often, people live away from their relatives, so it might not be possible to be with their family on Christmas. In this case, people will get together with friends to have a special dinner or a Christmas party. On this Christmas, every family has different traditions and customs depending on their history, ethnicity, and values. But the tradition that I share can be enjoyed with family and friends on Christmas.

2. Gift giving and gift exchanges

Many of us celebrate Christmas by giving a gift to our family, friends, and coworkers. There are a few special words related to presents and some different types of gift exchanging rituals. First of all, people wrap the gifts they give, which means that they put decorative wrapping paper around the gift. They might also put the gift in a gift bag.  Then when people exchange presents, they unwrap them to see what is inside the box.

Some families and offices might have a special kind of gift exchange. Since it is expensive to buy a present for all of your friends or coworkers, many groups do a gift exchange called a secret Santa. For secret Santa, every person takes the name of another person in the group and gives a present just for that one person.

3. Charity

The word “charity” can be described as used for any actions that help people who really need help - like homeless people or people without money for food. The “holiday season” is one of the best days for the charitable day of the year. As we say in one example, some people may volunteer to make food at a homeless shelter. Others might donate a gift to children from poor families. In general, we think that Christmas day is a season to help others, so we may see signs like “keep the spirit alive all the year”. The idea is that we should help others all long, and not just for a month at the end of the year.

4. Office parties

As we know, many businesses will have a holiday party or an end of the year party in December for their employees. T In-office parties they can’t say “Christmas” to keep the celebration secular. This keeps the party inclusive to all people, no matter their religious beliefs. Employees can bring their spouses to a holiday party or dinner.

5. Family traditions

Many of the families have their own unique traditions for Christmas. Usually, the family tradition is related to cultural backgrounds or locations. As we say in one example, in my family, we eat fondue on Christmas Eve. Then, on Christmas day we exchange presents. We also do one type of white elephant gift exchange, except every year we need to find gifts related to a specific letter of the alphabet. My friends have different traditions from their families. If you want to know more about Christmas tradition and you know any native English speaker then go and ask them if they have any idea about family Christmas tradition, and then enjoy these Christmas with new Family Christmas tradition.

6. Family meals

When the families get together for Christmas, they usually have a large, special meal. There are many families that gave a fancy plate or silverware but they can only use those sets on special occasions like Christmas Day. Although in every season family may love to eat a specific food, if they eat one plater this year then they can’t eat these players in next year. In my family, for example, we often have prime rib for the main meal. We also eat cardamom bread and a crab dip that my aunts made. It is this kind of traditional food that makes the day special in different ways to different people.

7. Decorations

On Christmas Day the most common decoration is to decorate the Christmas Tree and most families can decorate Christmas trees in their homes. Some people buy their trees from a large tree lot, and others go to Christmas tree farms and choose a tree to cut down. Some of the families may use Artificial Christmas Trees since year-long they can’t look so messy and you can use them every year. The most common decorations are called ornaments. These have a hook so that you can easily hang them on your Christmas Tree branches. In some families, ornaments have special significance. For example, if someone went on a special trip this year, they might buy ornaments of an airplane to remember the year.

On Christmas day the Christmas stocking is another common Christmas decoration. Stockings are large, long stocks that people often hang near the fireplace. The idea is that Santa Claus will come down the chimney and leave toys and treats in the stockings for the children but only if they have been good.
